CIVILIZATIONS OF EASTERN ASIA
Sailendra: The Sailendra ruled an agricultural kingdom on the island of Java, located in modern-day Indonesia. In Borobudur, they built a fantastic temple that was built with nine terraced levels, and had a strong Indian influence. This temple gave the people of Sailendra something to be proud in and was a testament to the power of Buddhism at that time. However, the Sailendra eventually fell to the powerful Srivijaya empire.
Srivijaya: From the 7th to the 13 centuries, the Srivijaya ruled the Strait of Malacca and the waters around Borneo, Sumatra, and Java, all located in modern-day Indonesia. They achieved their power through taxing these waters when trading vessels came through, as was necessary. This trade power boosted their economy, and they became more powerful. Their culture was also heavily influenced by India, similar to the conquered Sailendra. They established their capital, Palembang, on the island of Sumatra, and it became a great center of Buddhist learning.
